Hinton St Mary is an historic and friendly village located on the outskirts of the market town of Sturminster Newton, where a good range of shops, banks, doctors and other facilities are available.
Dating back to at least Roman times the importance of the village was crowned in 1964 when the local blacksmith unwittingly discovered a significant Roman mosaic which was viewed as so important that it was displayed in the main entrance of the British Museum. More recently a History of the World in 100 objects on Radio 4 selected artefacts from the British Museum and featured this mosaic. The village magazine reflects the villagers' pride in this wonderful artefact with the monthly magazine called the Mosaic.
Many of the period properties within the village would have formed part of the Pitt Rivers Estate, providing housing for estate works. Most are now privately owned and the village offers a wonderful array of period properties from small cottages to extensive historical homes. The village, however, has not been ‘pickled in aspic’ and also boasts more modern properties some of which reflect the vernacular architecture of a different age.
It has at its heart a wonderful Manor House which has been in the same family for four centuries. The Tithe Barn, which was restored as a theatre in the early 20th century offers a wonderful venue for village events, courtesy of Mr and Mrs Pitt River, including an Edwardian style Christmas party.
The White Horse Inn offers a warm welcome and good country food, and there is a charming parish church, cricket pitch and pavilion (doubling up sometimes as the village hall) from which the sound of leather on willow can be heard and wonderful panoramic views of the surrounding countryside enjoyed.
